Seg(Way) is a mixed-use neighbourhood proposal in Austin’s Hancock district that strengthens the city’s identity as the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’ by integrating music, public life, and everyday living. Rather than concentrating culture within entertainment districts, the project embeds performance spaces, creative venues, and gathering areas into housing, streets, and open spaces.
Designed around walkability and mixed-income living, Seg(Way) improves access to housing, transit, jobs, and daily amenities while supporting artists through affordable live–work spaces. Native landscaping, shaded public spaces, permeable surfaces, and passive environmental strategies create a resilient and climate-responsive public realm. Together, these interventions establish a vibrant, inclusive neighbourhood where culture, sustainability, and community become part of everyday urban life.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
RESPONDING TO AUSTIN'S CLIMATE
Open space serves as the driving force for Seg(way)’s design, linking neighborhoods through an urban trail that supports movement, gathering, and performance. Landscaped corridors, shaded plazas, and flexible outdoor venues blur the boundary between circulation and place, allowing music and social life to unfold organically. Sustainable design strategies; permeable surfaces, native planting, passive cooling, solar energy generation, and water-efficient systems reduce environmental impact while enhancing comfort and long-term operational efficiency. By treating open space as both ecological infrastructure and cultural stage, Seg(way) aligns environmental responsibility

STRIKING A BALANCE
CREATING COMMUNITY
As Austin’s technology-driven growth accelerates, access to housing, services, and dedicated cultural spaces has become increasingly unequal. Seg(way) prioritises equity by ensuring proximity to essential needs such as groceries, healthcare, transit, and employment opportunities, reducing the cost of daily living through walkable access rather than reliance on vehicles. Mixed-income housing, affordable live-work spaces for artists and musicians, and partnerships with UT Austin help foster creative communities often displaced first by rising land values. By embedding cultural space within a financially viable development, Seg(way) treats local culture as long-term civic
