Artist Residency
RainbowFish Educational Trust | 2023
Location: Karaikudi, India
Software: Rhino + Grasshopper, AutoCAD
This project was developed as part of Art for Play, an artist residency organised by RainbowFish Educational Trust, Chennai, which invited designers to create play equipment inspired by artists and their work. The proposal explores how art can become a catalyst for imaginative, inclusive play, allowing underprivileged children to engage with creativity through everyday play experiences.
Inspired by the organic, cushion-like sculptures of Japanese artist Risa Sato, the play structure translates her exploration of soft forms and contrasting volumes into an interactive landscape. Rather than prescribing a single way to play, the design encourages children to climb, crawl, swing, and explore freely through a series of interconnected curves, openings, and varying heights. By creating multiple ways to interact with the structure, the project promotes curiosity, physical activity, and social engagement while balancing safety, materiality, and accessibility. The result is a playful environment that celebrates creativity, collaboration, and the limitless nature of childhood imagination.
